There are many great companies I’ve profiled in my previous blog posts for those looking for freelance gigs as delivery drivers, but one such company that I haven’t mentioned yet is also one of the biggest and most well-known: Uber!
Uber has its own food delivery app that has been around since 2015 called UberEATS that is currently available in dozens of cities across the globe. Keep reading to find out more about partnering with UberEATS.
How the App Works
Customers scroll through the dedicated UberEATS app (separate from the Uber rideshare app, but same account credentials) where they can search by restaurant or type of cuisine for the foods of their choosing. Once they have made their selection, it shows them the full price of their order including the cost of the food, tax, and the booking fee. Their order gets sent to the restaurant where they begin preparing the food.
When it’s almost ready, a local UberEATS delivery partner will be offered the trip and they will go pick it up. The customer can track their order on a map as it is taken to their drop-off location. Once it’s delivered the customer and the delivery partner get to rate each other, similar to the experience in the Uber rideshare app. Unique features of UberEATS include an ability for a customer to schedule a delivery in advance and the ability to specify a delivery drop-off point such as whether they will meet the delivery partner outside, on the curb, or at the door.
Eligibility to Become a Delivery Partner
In many markets, UberEATS delivery partners can provide delivery services either by driving, riding a scooter, or a bike. The delivery options available will depend on your city and there may be additional eligibility requirements in your area. According to the UberEATS website, you may be eligible to be a delivery partner using a vehicle if you are at least 19 years old, have a driver’s license, are legally eligible to work, and posses a car that is from 1997 or newer. You may be eligible to be a scooter delivery partner if you are at least 19, have a valid driver’s license, have insurance, and are legally eligible to work; and may be eligible to become a bicycle delivery partner if you are 18 years old and legally able to work.
Take note that for drivers, there are more types of vehicles that are permitted for UberEats deliveries than for providing Uber ridesharing services. So even if you aren’t eligible for UberX, you could still be eligible to deliver with UberEATS. Two door vehicles are permitted, too!
What the Work is Like
Delivery partners can pick their own hours and work whenever they want. It is totally up to you if you want to work everyday or stay at home. When you’re ready to work, you go online in the app, and it will alert you when orders come in. If you accept an order, you just navigate to the restaurant, and the app provides you with optional GPS directions. Once you’ve dropped off the food to the customer you get paid instantly and can transfer the funds into your bank account right away!
Subject to local laws, you can work as much as you want, so the sky’s the limit on the amount of money you can bring in!
